How is the emergency examination carried out?
- An acute pain situation should always be assessed by a dentist and treated as soon as possible to prevent a problem from developing into a more serious condition.
- We have extensive experience treating various acute dental problems, including for patients with dental phobia.
- We make sure you feel well cared for throughout the entire treatment process. It should be pain-free and as comfortable as possible.
- Costly treatments can also be a concern for patients, which is why we will ensure you receive a cost estimate before the emergency dentist initiates any measures following the emergency examination.
We ensure that:
- Your mouth and teeth are examined to assess the emergency situation.
- You receive a cost estimate for treatment of the problem.
- The emergency problem is treated.
- Any further treatment needs are discussed calmly once you are pain-free.
We recommend that you contact us even if the pain appears to resolve on its own. There is a cause behind the pain or discomfort, and a dentist should carry out an examination so you receive professional advice and recommendations. Dental injuries should also be followed up with check-ups.
Common problems that trigger the need for emergency dental care and related advice
Dental injuries
- You may suffer a loose, knocked-out, or broken tooth as a result of, for example, a fall/blow to the teeth or chewing on something hard. The sooner you can come to us, the greater the chance of a good treatment outcome. Ideally, you should be with us within 60 minutes of the injury occurring.
- If the tooth has been completely knocked out, try to reinsert it and contact an emergency dentist as soon as possible for guidance and advice.
- If you cannot reinsert the knocked-out tooth, you can store it under your tongue or in a container with milk covering the tooth. The same applies to tooth fragments.
- If you have broken off a piece of a tooth, it is important to keep the fragment if it is larger than 3 mm. Smaller fragments are more difficult to bond back in place.
- If the tooth is loose but stays in place, be careful not to chew on anything hard.
- If it takes time before you can come in for an examination, lukewarm food and drink will cause less pain than hot food and drink.
- NOTE: It is important to ensure that the knocked-out tooth/fragment does not dry out! Also gently clean the tooth/fragment of any visible dirt. Handle the root as little as possible, as this can damage it.
Pain in a wisdom tooth
- Experiencing pain in wisdom teeth is common and there can be various explanations, such as inflammation or irritation of the gum tissue around the tooth.
- The pain can also occur due to crowding as a result of limited space.
Damaged dental bridge or crown
- Often a dentist can quickly replace a damaged bridge or crown.
Dental abscess due to lost/loose filling
- A lost or loose filling can cause pain because it no longer protects the tooth. Over time, inflammation develops in the tooth nerve and causes pain.
- The condition should be treated as soon as possible as the tooth nerve may be exposed to bacteria.
Toothache/tooth pain
- Toothache is a very common problem. The pain can originate from several conditions that need to be assessed by a dentist. One example is gum disease.
- Sometimes it can be difficult for the patient to pinpoint exactly where the pain is coming from. Toothache can be a sensation that spreads over a larger area, or moves around.
- Toothache can cause intense, pulsating, often throbbing pain. It can be somewhat relieved with over-the-counter pain medication such as a combination of Ibuprofen and Paracetamol.
- For some people, drinking cold water also helps.
Tooth sensitivity
- Tooth sensitivity can cause pain. There can be several reasons for the sensitivity and we recommend contacting a dentist for an examination. This will help clarify the cause and initiate any necessary measures to prevent the problem from developing into a more serious condition.
If you are unable to bite together after an injury
- If it is painful to bite together after an injury, this may be a symptom of a jaw injury. A jaw injury should be treated as soon as possible.
- You can contact your nearest emergency medical clinic or an emergency dentist with us for examination and guidance on further treatment.
What is the difference between a private emergency dental clinic and Oslo’s municipal emergency dental service?
The public emergency dental service in Oslo treats the following defined groups in the afternoon until early evening (see here for more information):
- Children and young people up to and including the year they turn 18. What was previously known as school dentists is now located outside schools because they also serve other patient groups, see the points below.
- Patients with intellectual disabilities.
- Patients who receive home nursing care weekly or have lived in an institution for at least three consecutive months.
- Patients who use LAR (medication-assisted rehabilitation) or MAR (medication-assisted rehabilitation).
- Patients included in TOO (torture, abuse or severe dental phobia).
If you belong to one of these groups and need urgent help outside the opening hours of the municipal emergency dental service, you can contact a private dental clinic and apply for reimbursement through the Emergency Dental Service.
Patients who do not fall within the above groups must therefore contact a private emergency dental clinic.
Reimbursement schemes – who is entitled to free dental treatment?
Certain groups are entitled to free or reduced-price dental care:
- Free: Children and young people up to and including the year they turn 18.
- Free: People with intellectual disabilities, whether in or outside of an institution.
- Free: Elderly long-term sick and disabled individuals living in institutions or receiving home nursing care.
- Free: *Those receiving social support through NAV.
- Reduced price: **Young people between 19 and up to and including the year they turn 20 pay 25% of public rates.
*If you are unable to cover your own living expenses and are otherwise entitled to support from NAV, you can apply for support for necessary dental treatment. The least expensive alternative will be covered.
**It is important to know that if you choose a private dentist without a prior agreement with the County Authority, you will have to bear the cost yourself – without any support.
Registration of injury is required in some situations
- Dental injuries that occur in the workplace must be documented, including injuries that occur on the way to or at school. The employer or school must submit an injury report to NAV.
- The dentist will receive a form from NAV to be completed. Registered injuries treated by a dentist can be claimed for reimbursement through grants.
- Contact your insurance company if you have accident insurance that may cover dental injuries.
- If an injury occurs during training or events organised by an association, other forms of organised activity, sports clubs or similar, you should check whether there is insurance in place to cover the treatment of the injury.
- Remember that dental injuries should be followed up with check-ups. This may also be important to document with the insurance company for the insurance to apply.
