Frequently asked questions and answers about Invisalign

Diskré, avtakbare skinner – skreddersydd for deg

Mange ønsker å rette tenner – men uten metallregulering

Gjennomsnittlig behandlingstid:
– 2–4 måneder for milde bittstillingsfeil
– 3,5–7 måneder for moderate bittstillingsfeil

Do you dream of beautiful and straight teeth? Invisalign is an invisible, removable orthodontic method – but the result is truly both visible and life-changing.
With straighter teeth and better oral health, most people feel greater confidence and smile more often.
Invisalign treatment is well worth the time and money
Removable invisible braces have become a popular method for achieving better tooth alignment, improved oral health – and increased confidence in both young people and adults.
Many adults dread fixed braces because they are often associated with adolescence and visible metal parts. Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners that are barely noticeable.
Prices for Invisalign – take advantage of our package deal and save money!
The price of aligner treatment depends on, among other things:
- How complex the problem is
- How long the treatment takes
- How many aligners you need
The dentist assesses this based on your tooth alignment during the examination. Greater orthodontic needs may require more aligners and a longer treatment time.
Invisalign is constantly developing its technology, and some patients can achieve results in 2–3 months. However, the actual treatment time depends on your correction needs – and on wearing the aligners as instructed.
Invisalign treatment takes place in three steps
Step 1: Consultation before treatment begins
Invisible aligners correct bite problems. Photo: Invisalign
- You book a consultation on our website (can also be combined with another visit).
- You receive an introduction to Invisalign and can view demo aligners and before/after photos.
- We take photos of your mouth and teeth, as well as a 3D scan.
- You get to see a digital visualisation of the possible result.
- You receive a preliminary price estimate and information about your options.
The exact price and duration can only be determined once an examination has been carried out and clinical data has been recorded.
Step 2: Assessment and the aligner treatment itself
Records
- Clinical photos (face, smile, mouth and teeth)
- X-rays of teeth and bone tissue
- Data is uploaded to the Smile Design system for simulation
Before starting, your dental status must be assessed. If it has been more than 6 months since your last examination, we strongly recommend doing this now to identify any conditions that may affect the result (e.g. missing teeth, dental implants, cavities (caries) or gum disease).
It typically takes around 10–14 days from records/examination until the treatment plan is ready. We will contact you when the plan is complete and schedule an appointment for a review.
ClinCheck (plan review)
- You receive a complete plan with an estimated treatment time
- The plan is reviewed step by step in 3D
- The number of aligners and duration is visualised
- You approve the plan, sign the Invisalign contract and pay the agreed amount before ordering
Start of treatment
- You receive your aligners
- Your teeth are cleaned, and composite attachments are bonded on as anchor points
- You receive instructions on use, maintenance and switching intervals (often every 5th–14th day)
Check-ups
During treatment, you typically come in for a check-up every 5–7 weeks for follow-up, new aligners and any adjustments. We also check the gums, plaque formation and that the teeth are moving according to plan.
Refinement
Before treatment is completed, you should be fully satisfied. Some patients wish for additional correction towards the end (“refinement”). This is included in the price for Advanced, but may cost extra for Simple and Medium.
Treatment complete
- The composite attachments are removed
- The result is documented with after photos
- A scan is taken for a retainer (fixed or removable)
- You receive information on continued use and maintenance
Step 3: The retention phase – how to maintain your result
Teeth can move in the jawbone throughout life. After completing orthodontic treatment, the teeth must therefore be stabilised (retention) to preserve the result. A retainer must be worn for as long as you wish to maintain the achieved result.
Two common methods of stabilisation:
- Fixed retainer (metal wire) is cemented to the back of the front teeth.
- Removable retainer (plastic aligner) is worn at night.
Invisalign’s retainer aligners are called Vivera. They resemble the treatment aligners but should not put pressure on the teeth. The advantage is easier dental care and the fact that you are already accustomed to wearing aligners. The disadvantage is that if you forget to wear them, your teeth may shift back (“relapse”).
The aligners are often worn day and night at first, then every night. If you notice that the night aligner starts to feel tight, you should wear it more frequently. An added benefit is that they can be reused for teeth whitening.
Where possible, a fixed retainer is often recommended because it is predictable (you cannot forget to wear it). The disadvantage is that cleaning can be somewhat more demanding. Sometimes a wire is not possible because the bite may cause the front teeth to press against the wire – in that case, plastic aligners are chosen.
After treatment, it is important to remember
- Wear your retainer as instructed by your dentist.
- Attend regular check-ups, cleaning and polishing appointments.
- Notify us promptly if your retainer is lost or damaged.
- Continue with good oral hygiene to preserve your smile.
A few minor disadvantages of aligners
- Aligners may cause slightly unclear speech at first.
- Edges can cause sores in the oral mucosa.
- You need to change aligners frequently.
- Large gaps may make the aligners visible at close range (this can often be resolved with a “false tooth” built into the aligner).
Your commitment determines how successful the treatment will be
For the best result, the aligners must be worn consistently – often a minimum of 22 hours per day. To preserve the result, many patients will also need to wear a retainer for an extended period.
Here are some useful tips for succeeding with Invisalign treatment
- Practise speaking with the aligners in during the first few days.
- Only remove them for dental care, eating and drinking (except water).
- Clean the aligners daily with a toothbrush and soap-free toothpaste (or cleaning tablets).
- Use cold water when cleaning – hot water can damage the plastic.
- Use dental floss daily for good hygiene and to avoid anything that may affect tooth movement.
- Only drink water while wearing the aligners (sugary drinks can cause plaque/cavities).
- Store the aligners in their case when eating (not in a napkin).
- Avoid chewing gum – it can stick to the aligners.
- Do not smoke while wearing the aligners – they may become discoloured.
- Avoid strongly pigmented foods and drinks (e.g. blueberries, turmeric, red wine, black coffee, tomato sauce) while wearing the aligners.
Is it uncomfortable to wear Invisalign aligners?
Some people experience mild, temporary discomfort at the start or when switching to a new aligner. It feels like pressure and means that the treatment is working. This is normal and usually passes after a few days.
Is orthodontic treatment more uncomfortable for adults?
There is no demonstrable difference between children and adults. Most people do not experience pain, but it can feel unfamiliar to have something on your teeth at first. Most people quickly get used to wearing the aligners.
Who can treat patients with Invisalign?
The dentist must be certified for Invisalign. There are also different levels of certification (front teeth vs. full bite). Therefore, choose a provider who is certified.
Helfo reimbursement for Invisalign treatment
Children and young people can often have orthodontic treatment covered under Helfo’s rules, and a referral to an orthodontist is normally required. Our orthodontic dentists accept referrals.
Adults are generally not entitled to reimbursement after the age of 20, but there are exceptions:
- As part of treatment for serious gum disease
- In cases of congenitally missing teeth
- In cases of serious bite problems requiring surgery and orthodontic treatment
- In cases of specific medical conditions (see list at Helfo)
- In cases of severe tooth wear requiring correction of bite problems prior to treatment
- Following an occupational injury
- Following an accident
Your dentist is familiar with the rules and can assist with the necessary documentation.
